by Ronald J Kimball

In March 2004, I went on a week-long cruise with my family. These pictures are from day 1, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Around San Juan
First things first, I dropped off my luggage at our ship, the Carnival Destiny, before going to explore the city
A statue of Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón)
A statue of Señor Frog, welcoming people to his eponymous restaurant
Fort San Cristobal
San Juan National Historic Site includes Fort El Morro and Fort San Cristobal; the following photos are of Fort San Cristobal
A view of the Capitol building from the fort
A dimly-lit tunnel in the fort, with flash...
...and the same tunnel without flash
In one of the rooms, these drawings of galleons may have been done by a Spanish captain awaiting execution for mutiny
Arches along the plaza
Cannons arrayed in the Plaza de Armas
The chapel
A cannon set up at a window
A figure of the Santa Maria, Columbus's flagship
A window covered by wooden beams
Another window, looking on the city
Looking over the rooftops of San Juan
Three historical figures
Our cruise ship, seen from the fort
The Arms of Charles III
The Plaza de Armas
Looking out at the city again
Oh no! It's aimed right at our ship!
Another good view of the Carnival Destiny and the ship terminal
Looking across the city at the airport and more of Puerto Rico
A sentry box looking over the water
Another view across the city to the rest of the island
The flags of the USA and Puerto Rico, and the Burgundy Cross, a Spanish military flag
A cannon aimed through a notch in the fort wall
Peeking out at the Capitol building
A view along the coast
Looking across the Plaza de Armas at the chapel and the barracks
Heading out of the fort, I turned back to take this shot of the long ramp leading up to the entrace
The outer wall of the fort near the entrance
A sentry box with a view of the fort
Another sentry box looking over the water
